For the first time since 1979,
the ITS conference returned to Hamburg. There were about 100 exhibitors present, and the delegates had the chance to network
and listen to over 20 papers. In addition to the conference programme there were other highlights, such as the brand new
Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid, which all interested delegates were invited to trial. It was a fascinating and unique new technology
for the tugboat industry. The company EDDY Tug, in co-operation with Holland Shipyard, also displayed their new hybrid vessel,
The ABR Company had some nice ideas to entertain the delegates. After the welcome cocktail party on Monday,
sponsored by Damen, there was a gala dinner on Thursday evening. Allan and his team had booked the whole Fischauktionshalle
and converted it into a fine restaurant. For entertainment we had Tenors Unlimited and four very nice ladies singing and
dancing, followed by a live band and more dancing. The gala dinner was sponsored by Caterpillar Marine. It was a great
evening, with a fantastic buffet!
A harbour tour took place at 10.30 the following morning. Schottel and The Shipowners’ Protection invited
delegates, guest and exhibitors onboard Louisiana Star. We had a tour through the port until late afternoon, culminating
in a tugboat ballet.
I have known of the ABR Company’s magazine, International Tug & OSV, for years. Last year Dawn, the editor, did an
interview with me about my hobby after I sent her some photos of my tugboats.
It was a great surprise to get an invitation to ITS 2014, but I took the chance to meet people from the "real world".
This wasn’t a normal shipping fair. Just as advertised, it is the world´s largest gathering of tug, salvage and OSV experts!
I met a lot of new people and made some friends. Unfortunately, I was only able to stay for two days, but it was a fantastic
event: a lot of nice people, valuable contacts, and perfect organisation.
Allan, Garth, Dawn and Val - thank you very much again for the invitation and the hospitality, it was marvellous.
In the attachment you will find some impressions of the event. My prize for the best booth goes to Uzmar. They had a
presentation combining a horizontal plan with a tablet computer to show a 3D-model (see photo below), something I have
never seen before.
